Advanced Chair Caning: A practical approach to antique rattan restoration.
Event description
If you've already attended our introduction to chair caning course and are looking to further develop your weaving skills, then this is for you.
In this workshop, you'll be encouraged to bring in your own piece of vintage or antique furniture (e.g. chair, piano stool, foot stool, side table) in need of woven rattan repair OR use one of our training frames to weave alternative patterns. We can always supply a chair for you to work on if need be.
You'll learn the important steps required prior to beginning the weave and will be guided through the individual technical challenges of your individual piece as they arise.
The advanced chair caning workshop will be two half days (10th May 2025 and 17th May 2025, 9AM-12Midday both days), set a week apart and involves students bringing their chairs along.
Day 1 sees us checking over your chair, clearing the old broken cane out, prepping the finish, prepping the hoop, prepping the frame, setting the layout and then start weaving. We'll work through problems unique to your chair along the way.
The gap between the day 1 and day 2 sessions is there to allow students to weave the balance of the first 4 steps or so at home, after day 1.
Day 2 sees us then working through the later more difficult steps together (or whichever steps you'd prefer guidance on).
The advanced chair caning workshop cost (for both half day sessions), includes tea, coffee, morning tea, tools and a chair caning kit for your project (pegs, sample pattern, probe and weaving cane).
Our workshops are held in and around The Old South Arm School built in 1880!
