    Event description

Join the enAble Institute and Justice Health Group for a free seminar presentation from the esteemed Professor Susan Sawyer AM on the subject of "Advancing adolescent health"

In this seminar, Professor Sawyer will review contemporary understandings of adolescence and share her perspective on how the field of adolescent health has developed in Australia, in the context of wider initiatives such as the 2015 UN Global Strategy for Women’s Children’s and Adolescents’ Health, the 2016 Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health, and the 2023 Global Forum for Adolescents.

Professor Sawyer holds the Geoff and Helen Handbury Chair of Adolescent Health at the University of Melbourne. She is Director of the Centre for Adolescent Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital (2005-), a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Adolescent health.

A paediatrician by training, Susan has helped develop the field of adolescent health, nationally and globally. As the inaugural chair of the Royal Australasian College of Physician's committee on adolescent health (2002-2007) her efforts established the framework that led to the accreditation of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine as a specialist field of medical practice in Australia. Globally, she is the immediate past-president of the International Association for Adolescent Health (president, 2017-21) and current co-chair of the International Pediatric Association special advisory group on Adolescent Medicine. She co-led the 2016 Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing.

Professor Sawyer's presentation will be followed by a light lunch at 1pm.
