Description

Canterbury artist Margaret Stoddart went on two adventures to Rēkohu/Wharekauri (the Chatham Islands).

In 1886 and 1891, Margaret visited friends to record the remote location's unique vegetation. Canterbury Museum looks after an album Margaret used to record her travels and 12 of her botanical paintings from the trips.

This talk will explore Stoddart's life in the period surrounding these visits and take a closer look at these botanical studies, which now form part of a larger collection of Stoddart's work in Canterbury Museum.

Frances Husband is Associate Curator Human History at Canterbury Museum and has a background in Fine Arts. She assisted researcher Vickie Hearnshaw on her Records article about Stoddart, published in 2022, and provides curatorial support for Ravenscar House Museum, which displays several of Margaret Stoddart's paintings.

A Friends of the Canterbury Museum talk.
