AERIAL YOGA: STRETCH & TAKE FLIGHT
Omeo Hub
Event description
Are you ready to experience the magic of aerial yoga?
Using a hammock suspended from the ceiling, you’ll perform yoga poses while floating above the ground. This unique practice offers a variety of benefits, including increased flexibility, improved strength, and reduced stress. It’s also incredibly good fun!
Essentials
- Comfortable Clothing:
- Fitted & Breathable: Opt for form-fitting attire made of breathable, moisture-wicking fabric to stay cool and avoid getting tangled in the fabric. Leggings, yoga pants, and fitted tops are ideal.
- Coverage: Ensure your clothing covers your underarms and the backs of your knees to prevent chafing or discomfort from the fabric. Longer sleeves and pants might be too hot; consider lightweight, breathable options if you prefer more coverage. No zippers allowed.
- Hydration:
- Water Bottle: Bring a large, insulated water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the class. Perth summers are hot, so staying hydrated is crucial. Consider bringing two bottles.
- Personal Items:
- Hair Tie: Secure your hair back to keep it out of your face during inversions and movements.
- Minimal Jewelry: Remove all jewelry that could snag on the fabric or cause discomfort.
- Socks: Socks might be too warm. Consider going barefoot unless the studio specifically recommends socks.
- Sunscreen: Apply high SPF sunscreen before class to protect your skin from the strong Perth sun. Reapply as needed.
- Sunglasses: Essential for protecting your eyes from the bright summer sun.
- Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is highly recommended for extra sun protection.
- Towel: A small towel can be useful for wiping sweat.
- Insect Repellent: While less of an issue during the day, mosquitoes can be present at dusk. Consider bringing bug spray, especially for evening classes.
Before Class
- Arrival Time:
- 10 Minutes Early: Aim to arrive 10 minutes before the session starts to allow time for check-in, setup, and any preliminary instructions. This is especially important outdoors as setup might take a little longer.
- Food:
- Light Meal: Have a light meal or snack 1-2 hours before class to avoid feeling full or hungry during the session.
- Avoid Heavy Meals: Refrain from eating a heavy meal right before class.
- Hydration:
- Drink Water: Hydrate well before class to prepare your body for the activity. Start hydrating well in advance of the class, not just right before.
- Personal Hygiene:
- Cleanliness: Ensure you are clean and fresh, as you will be in close proximity to others.
- Avoid Strong Scents: Refrain from wearing strong perfumes or colognes that could irritate others (and might attract bugs outdoors).
During Class
- Listen to Instructor:
- Guidance: Pay close attention to the instructor's guidance and safety instructions. Outdoor conditions, especially heat, can be a factor.
- Modifications: Don't hesitate to ask for modifications if you have any concerns or limitations.
- Communicate:
- Concerns: Inform the instructor of any injuries, medical conditions, or concerns you may have. Be especially mindful of any heat-related sensitivities.
- Discomfort: If you experience any discomfort, dizziness, or feel unwell (especially signs of heat exhaustion) during the class, let the instructor know immediately.
- Relax and Enjoy:
- Embrace the Experience: Relax, trust the fabric, and enjoy the unique experience of aerial movement in the beautiful Perth summer.
- Have Fun: Approach the class with a positive attitude and embrace the learning process.
Important Considerations
- Age Recommendation: Generally suitable for ages 7 to 50, but check with the studio for their specific age requirements.
- Health Contraindications: Aerial classes are not recommended for individuals with the following conditions:
- Motion sickness
- Pregnancy
- Heart risk or conditions
- Asthma (unless well-managed and discussed with the instructor)
- Any other serious illness or health concern. Consult with your doctor if you have any doubts.
- Heat: Be extra mindful of the heat in Perth summer. The instructor should take precautions, but it's also your responsibility to listen to your body.
- Weather: Be prepared for changing weather conditions. The instructor may cancel or postpone the class due to extreme heat, wind, or other weather events.
- Ground Conditions: Be aware of the ground surface where the class is held. It might be uneven or have natural elements.
Additional Tips
- Observe: If it's your first class, take a moment to observe others and get a sense of the flow.
- Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions if you are unsure about anything.
- Respect the Space: Treat the outdoor environment and equipment with respect.
- Leave Feedback: Share your feedback with the instructor to help improve future classes.
By following this Perth summer-specific checklist, you'll be even better prepared to enjoy your outdoor Aerial Yoga, Lyra, or Aerial Hammock class and stay safe in the heat.
