Can Tiny Homes Solve Our Affordable Housing Crisis?
Australia is building the biggest houses in the world at a time when climate change requires us to reduce our consumption. We also continue to have two of the top four most unaffordable housing markets in Sydney and Melbourne. Are tiny homes the answer to both the affordability and environmental crises?
Hear new research from Deakin University investigating the viability of tiny-house alternatives in relation to five key issues: regulatory barriers, construction and environmental design performance, design for ageing-in-place, finance and community integration. How do tiny homes compare in relation to other standard housing?
We will also hear from two charities that have used tiny homes in their work to prevent homelessness in our community.

Richard Tucker, Professor Faculty of Science Engineering & Built Environment, Deakin University
Richard is co-leader of HOME, a Deakin research hub providing evidence-based, community-tailored housing and social inclusion strategies. Most recently Richard and his colleagues have explored the viability of affordable small homes for those wanting to live sustainable and socially integrated lives.
Jo Swift, CEO, Kids Under Cover
Jo Swift is the CEO of Kids Under Cover, and has been leading the organisation since 2007. Kids Under Cover is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention of youth homelessness. Jo’s energy and genuine passion for making a lasting difference in the lives of homeless and at-risk young people derives from those supported by the Kids Under Cover programs. Jo is also a proud board member of the Council to Homeless Persons.
Vere Longmore, Development Manager, Launch Housing
Vere is the Development Manager at Launch Housing, working on innovative housing solutions across the spectrum of housing. This includes the Harris Transportables Housing Project in Melbourne’s inner west. The project created 48 tiny homes across 7 sites using parcels of vacant VicRoads land.
