The Big O: Aerial Movement in Rope

Class Description:

Are you feeling stuck in your self-suspension practice and want the freedom to explore fun, weird, and/or pretty shapes? Do you find circus/aerial arts like silks and lyra inspiring and want to try those out in a ropey way? Or do you simply want a quick rope high with very little prep? Then this is the class for you!

In this class you’ll explore open loop suspension, as well as other flexible apparatuses, and be able to explore what shapes your body can do! You’re only limited by your imagination, and maybe your arm/core strength. You’ll be guided through safety and material considerations, tying a secure open loop or rope hammock, and some starting shapes to get a feel for what’s possible in open loop suspension since it’s more open-ended than typical western bondage.

If you’re new to self-suspension please read through the pre-reqs and decide for yourself if this is the right class for you.

Pre-requisites:

  • Ability to make a secure upper upline lock-off like a munter

  • Ability to tie a non-collapsing single column

  • Has been in rope self-suspension before

If you don’t know the prerequisites, please consider attending classes like Rope 101 (offered every month at Bight Night) to learn the prerequisite skills and knowledge before attending this event. Class time is limited, so attendees who are not prepared to tie along may audit the class by watching and taking notes rather than participating hands on.

Additional Materials:

  • At least one 30ft length of rated synthetic rope (Posh, Nylon, MFP), ideally a 50ft+ length or two 30fts

  • Hardpoint attachment gear:

    • Minimum 2 slings/synthetic rope

    • Minimum 2 carabiners

    • Optional: Rigging plate and a swivel

  • Optional but highly encouraged: Form-fitting clothing like leggings

About the Presenters:
Hiya, I’m _griffin (they/them)! I’m based in Chicago and I’m a rope switch and self-tier with a strong bent towards circus-y and weird rope. I’ve been doing rope for about 5 years (10 if you know my origin story) and I’ve been self-tying for 2 years as a way to challenge myself and feel pretty.

My rope practice skews towards the silly circus vibe as a way to reclaim kink from the internal and external pressure for my kink to be an intense and/or sexual thing. I take a lot of pride in being the weirdo in the dungeon, tying someone into a chaos harness with bat wings that I can puppet with uplines while other people are getting fisted on the other end of the dungeon. Kink can and should be a source of joy regardless of where that comes from.

Play Party

Any play (within LNK venue guidelines) is welcome at this party! Party rules can be reviewed at louisvillenk.com/rules. At this party, the venue will be set up with rope in mind. Extra floor play space and hardpoints will be set up, though the usual furniture (crosses, benches, etc) will be available too. Have a question at the party or need some help making the space work for your scene? Talk to an event team member, identifiable by their bright yellow lanyards and safety shears!

Our venue offers:

  • play furniture (A frame style rigs, athletic mats, spanking benches, St. Andrews style crosses, etc)

  • luggage racks to store personal items and equipment

  • social area

  • snack bar and Keurig machine (food and beverage can also be brought in)

  • after-care/quiet area

  • outdoor smoking area

  • single occupancy bathroom

  • Free and ample paved parking within a couple minutes walk of the space. Handicapped parking is available directly beside the space. Please check the parking map in the ticket confirmation for detailed parking instructions!

Is this your first time? Don't worry, we'll be gentle! An event team member will give you a welcome orientation tour to show you with the space layout and highlight some of the most important rules and etiquette!

Event Rules and Expectations:

  • LNK Rules & Ban Lists: All LNK rules, ban lists, and expectations apply to our events in addition to any that we set. Please be sure to review these rules linked in the ticket confirmation.

  • Consent: Be sure to negotiate BEFORE touching someone and/or someone's belongings AND before having a rope experience with someone, even at classes. If you're not sure how to navigate consent and negotiations, please ask SnappedGinger or event staff (identifiable by the yellow lanyards).

  • RACK Space: Interact at your own risk. If you have questions or concerns at the event, please talk to SnappedGinger or event staff.

  • Photos: Photos are allowed as long as EVERYONE in the photo consents to being in the photo. This includes people in the background! Blurring them out later is NOT a solution. The photo should not be taken if any part of anyone's body appears in the frame without their consent.

  • Consequences: Violating these rules may result in a time-out or permanent ban.
