Event Description

Africa Re/Designs Prelude: Decolonising Design as Cultural Reclamation is a special online roundtable designed to spark dialogue ahead of the main Africa Re/Designs gathering in Accra this November.

Supported by the Design History Society, this 90-minute session will bring together scholars, designers, and practitioners from across Africa, the diaspora, and beyond to reflect on two chapters from Yaw Ofosu-Asare’s recent books Decolonising Design in Africa and African Design Futures.

The conversation will centre on two themes: the foundations of African design education and the possibilities of designing for decolonised consciousness. Respondents will share insights, critiques, and provocations that connect history, pedagogy, and imagination. Participants will have the chance to listen, learn, and contribute to a dialogue that reframes design as cultural reclamation and collective future-making.

This event is valuable for anyone interested in design, culture, education, or Pan-African futures. It is not just an academic discussion, but an opportunity to connect across continents, to build momentum, and to prepare for a landmark gathering in Accra later this year.

Join us for a conversation that asks what it means to decolonise design, and how African creativity can reshape the future.
