An Afternoon with the Hon. Michael Kirby AC
Description
IMPORTANT VENUE CHANGE: The event will now be held in the Lecture Theatre at the Museum of Contemporary Art (140 George St, The Rocks NSW 2000).
Please arrive by 1:55pm.
Join UTS LSS President Siya Khatri and ALSA President Will Massey for an afternoon with former High Court Justice The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG.
One of the most influential legal figures in Australian history, Justice Kirby served on the High Court of Australia from 1996 to 2009 and became known as "The Great Dissenter" for his fearless and principled judgments. Across a career spanning more than five decades — from foundation Chairman of the Australian Law Reform Commission, to President of the NSW Court of Appeal, to Chair of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry into human rights in North Korea — he has been a tireless advocate for human rights, judicial independence, and law reform.
In this intimate conversation, Justice Kirby will reflect on his life on and off the bench: the art of dissent and why it matters, the role of the courts in protecting human rights, the future of the legal profession, and his advice for the next generation of lawyers — followed by time for audience questions.
Whether you're a future barrister, an aspiring reformer, or simply curious to hear from one of Australia's great legal minds, this is an afternoon not to be missed.
