Join us at the University of Tasmania for a special screening of the upcoming ABC docuseries Ages of Ice.
From Antarctica to the Arctic, Ages of Ice is a high-stakes journey into the heart of our planet’s frozen wilderness, following researchers as they push the boundaries of exploration. Each mission is a step toward understanding how glaciers move, how oceans rise, and how the rhythms of the past compare to the quickening tempo of today. As the series moves from intimate wildlife moments to discoveries of global consequence, we witness the race to understand a planet in transition through the extraordinary people who go to the ends of the Earth to uncover what comes next.
The screening will be followed by a discussion hosted by award-winning ABC Science Journalist Zoe Kean, with Karina Holden (Series Director, Writer and Executive Producer), Dr Susanne Lockhart (Antarctic Marine Biologist, deep-sea explorer whose worked has helped reveal some of the Southern Ocean's most extraordinary hidden ecosystems), and Ian Kelly (Postdoctoral researcher at UTAS, whose work focuses on geophysical investigations of the Antarctic sub-ice environment).

Host - Zoe Kean
Zoe Kean (OAM) is an award-winning science journalist. Based at ABC Radio Hobart, she tells stories from Tasmania and beyond. Her writing has been included 'The Best Australian Science Writing' and she was a co-author of the anthology in 2025. She has also written a book on evolutionary biology 'Why Are We Like This?'. Zoe is also a regular guest across local and national ABC radio. You can follow her on social media where she posts as Zoe_Kean_Sci.
Panellist - Karina Holden
Karina Holden, Series Director, Writer and Executive Producer of AGES OF ICE, is the visionary force steering the production. With a unique blend of scientific knowledge and storytelling experience, Karina brings an unparalleled depth to the series with post graduate qualifications in Conservation Biology and a career that has consistently straddled the line between science communication and high-end documentary filmmaking. Her work has taken her to the world’s greatest wilderness areas on every continent, producing and directing films about the Black Summer fires, coral bleaching, ocean change and climate science. Karina remains a passionate ambassador of conservation work and she has been awarded the Banksia Sustainability award, the Okeanos Prix for services to the ocean, as well asrecognition for her broader work in non-fiction film making, including the globally successful LOVE ON THE SPECTRUM winner of 8 Emmy® Awards. As Head of Factual at Northern Pictures she has overseen more than 30 factual series for the company for global broadcasters and streamers.
Panellist - Dr Susanne Lockhart
Dr Susanne Lockhart is an Antarctic marine biologist and deep-sea explorer whose work has helped reveal some of the Southern Ocean’s most extraordinary hidden ecosystems. Founder of Southern Benthics, Research Associate at the California Academy of Sciences and advisor to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC), she uses submersibles to explore vulnerable seafloor habitats rarely seen by human eyes. She has spent nearly 50 hours at the seafloor around Antarctica and her discoveries of ancient coral gardens and sponge communities have directly informed international conservation measures. Thanks to Susanne's work, more than 500 square kilometres (200 square miles) of Antarctic seafloor are now permanently protected from commercial bottom trawling. Combining scientific discovery with conservation action, she is helping safeguard some of the last truly wild ecosystems on Earth.
Panellist - Ian Kelly
Ian Kelly is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Tasmania whose work focuses on geophysical investigations of the Antarctic sub-ice environment. As part of the Geophysical Research Infrastructure for Antarctica (GRIT) project, he uses seismic surveys to peer deep beneath the ice in some of the most remote regions in East Antarctica. By uncovering this sub-ice environment, Ian is helping scientists understand the history of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and how it may evolve in the future. His research contributes towards broader efforts aiming to predict Antarctica's future contribution to global sea level rise and its implications for coastal communities worldwide.
