AgRi-Silience Webinar Two: ‘Managing Risk’

In the lead up to the commencement of Round Two of the AgRi-Silience Program, Livestock SA and the Coo-ee Collective are proud to host a free, three part webinar series throughout February.

The second session will focus on risk that can be present in your farming business and strategies that you can take to mitigate these risks. 

Join leading agribusiness specialists Dr Jaqueline Cotton, Senior Lecturer/Research Rural Health Deakin University and National Centre for Farmer Health, Judd Smith, owner Strategic Consulting and Finance, and David Cornish, Director of Centre for the Study of Agribusiness Marcus Oldham College, to learn more about managing people, business, production and seasonal risk.

About the presenters: 

Dr Jacqueline Cotton, PhD, Senior Lecturer/Research Rural Health, Deakin University and National Centre for Farmer Health 

Jacquie joined the National Centre for Farmer Health (NCFH) in 2012 as Researcher and Lecturer in Rural Health. Graduating from La Trobe University in 2003, she continued on to complete a Doctorate in Agriculture in 2009. Prior to joining the NCFH team, Jacquie has worked as course developer and trainer at Rural Industries Skill Training in Hamilton, and on the teaching and research team at La Trobe University in the Department of Agricultural Sciences, specialising in livestock parasite management in sheep and cattle.

Dr Cotton is appointed a member to both the Victorian FarmSafe committee, the recently formed Agriculture Safety Reference Group established by WorkSafe Victoria and the Rural Industries Skills Training Animal Ethics committee. She is currently a scientific reviewer for a number of international journals, including the Journal of Agromedicine, Archives of Environmental and Occupational Health and the International Journal of Environmental Health Research.

Jacquie has a passion for agriculture, education and farmer engagement and has jumped at the chance to combine these with farmer health at NCFH. Jacquie’s research interests include Cholinesterase monitoring in farmers exposed to organophosphate chemicals, farm safety culture and children on farms.

Judd Smith, Strategic Consulting and Finance

Judd has a passion for seeing his clients achieve success, he works hard to identify the needs of the businesses he works for, whether it be a family farm or corporate enterprise. With this knowledge he is able to foster relationships at a multi-level and adapt his services to achieve outcomes.

Judd previously worked 19 years across South Australia for a major bank, which has led to an understanding of banking at many levels and was Regional Manager for the Southern Region of South Australia. With this experience, he has become a specialist consultant and is now using these skills to provide a holistic service for his clients from economic performance and profitability, gross margin analysis to succession planning and personal goal setting.

Judd appreciates the needs of farmers and agribusiness, but has also developed networks and skills in commercial, wine, viticulture and intensive farming. He has a knack for recognising business needs and identifying solutions, building resilience in businesses to promote success now and into the future.

David Cornish, Program Director, Marcus Oldham Rural Leadership Program

David has over 30 years experience in Agriculture Finance including roles such as Agricultural Economist, Agribusiness Marketing Manager and senior banking roles in regional NSW and Victoria for the National Australia Bank. He was the initial CEO of Rabo Financial Advisors and spent five years as a Farm Consultant with Mike Stephens & Associates focusing on agricultural investment opportunities for wholesale investment funds.

David has worked at Landmark as the Regional Manager for Western Victoria and then as a strategy manager for the organisation. Since 2012 David has consulted to agricultural investment companies supporting their farm investment strategy in Australia. In his spare time, he is involved in a family farming operation based at Casterton in Western Victoria.  David is a full-time lecturer at Marcus Oldham, in Marketing and Business Communications.
