Event description

The ACIAR-funded research project, Agricultural Policy Development in Mongolia, supports Mongolia’s rural and agricultural transformation by fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration with Australian experts. Mongolia is undergoing a critical economic transition, aiming to diversify beyond its mining-dominated economy by revitalizing its predominantly pastoral agricultural sector. Despite its potential, the sector faces significant challenges, including low productivity, climate vulnerabilities, and policy gaps. At the request of Mongolian officials, this project unites policymakers, researchers, and practitioners from Mongolia and Australia to share insights on agricultural policy evolution, focusing on rural transformation, resource management, biosecurity, government support mechanisms, and trade facilitation. Hosted by the Australian National University (ANU) with ACIAR’s support, the project leverages Australia’s reform experience to inform evidence-based, inclusive, and sustainable agricultural policies aligned with Mongolia’s long-term development goals.

To disseminate initial research outcomes and strengthen partnerships, we propose a one-day workshop at ANU on June 6, 2025, with the following objectives:

  • Share practical lessons from Australia’s agricultural policy reforms to enhance Mongolia’s policy framework.
  • Identify collaborative strategies to boost productivity, develop value chains, and enhance export competitiveness.
  • Build policy capacity within Mongolia’s agricultural sector through targeted knowledge exchange.
  • Foster dialogue on sustainable and inclusive agricultural development to address structural and environmental challenges.

This workshop will serve as a platform to advance Mongolia’s agricultural policy development, promoting resilience and economic diversification through robust, evidence-based solutions.
