Title of the Talk
How Do We Raise and Educate Kids in the Age of AI? Realities and Choices for Hong Kong Parents in Australia
Talk Description
Many Hong Kong families who move to Australia expect school life to be less stressful—and that children can learn more easily and happily. But over time, many parents discover a different reality. Competition for Opportunity Classes (OC), selective schools, and even some private schools can be intense. More and more Asian-background children growing up in Australia are turning to after-school tutoring and extra training just to keep up.
At the same time, as AI reshapes learning and work, Australia’s results in international assessments such as PISA continue to lag behind places like Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan in core skills like reading and mathematics. So what should parents do? Should we provide more academic support outside school? How do we avoid becoming “tiger parents” without leaving our kids underprepared? And if we want our children to keep speaking Cantonese and learning Chinese, will that slow down their English development—or can bilingualism be a strength?
This session also looks at the changing digital environment for children. Australia is moving to implement a “social media ban for under-16s”—what might this mean for kids’ learning, social lives, and wellbeing? And platforms like Roblox, which blend gaming with creativity and user-generated content: are they mainly risks to manage, or opportunities to learn?
Join us for a practical, parent-focused discussion to help you make informed, balanced choices for your child in an AI-driven world.
The talk will be given in Cantonese.
