Mon, 21 Sep, 9am - Tue, 22 Sep, 5pm AEST

Description

Got an idea for how AI could help a social enterprise do more good? Or the skills to build one? Join us at UTS Startups for a fast, hands-on two-day hackathon where builders, designers, founders and changemakers team up to turn AI ideas into working solutions for social good.

How it works

Day 1 — Monday 21 September | Validate Problem

Bring a problem, an idea, or just your curiosity. Pitch it to the room, work with mentors to sharpen your concept, stress-test it against real needs. By the end of the day, the strongest ideas will have found their teams and started building.

Day 2 — Tuesday 22 September | Build & Pitch

Heads down with your team, continuing to turn Day 1's concepts into working prototypes — with mentors on hand to help you get unstuck and go further. The top 5 teams will get to pitch to the whole room.

Both days run 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at UTS Startups.

Who it's for

Social enterprises with problems worth solving, students eager to build something that matters, and developers who want to put their skills to work for impact. You don't need a team or a finished idea to join — that's what Day 1 is for.

FAQs

  • Who is this hackathon for?

Everyone. Whether you're a developer, designer, founder, student, domain expert or just someone who cares about social impact, you're welcome — technical and non-technical alike. You don't need prior hackathon experience, and you don't need to arrive with a team or a fully-formed idea. Come with curiosity; we'll help you find a team and shape something worth building.

  • Do I need to attend both days?

Yes. The first day will mainly be focused on team formation and problem validation, and the second day on building the solution.

  • Will lunch be provided?

No. However we have secured discounts to nearby restaurants that you can go to if you wish.

  • Who will own the IP?

The team that builds it. Each team retains ownership of the ideas and software they create over the two days.

Attending partners and social enterprises don't automatically gain any rights to use what's built — if a team and an organisation want to take a project further together, that's arranged directly between them under their own agreement.

We encourage participants working with social enterprises to strongly consider donating their work to the social enterprise.

  • How will teams be formed?

You will be able to choose your own teams on the day. We recommend groups of 3 to 5 participants.

  • Can I submit a problem for people to solve?

Yes. We have two ways social enterprises can encourage teams to work on specific problems at the hackathon:

    • Sponsor a category prize. An organisation can sponsor or provide a "category" prize (e.g. <Company Name> Literacy Prize, or <Company Name> Housing People Prize) to incentivize participants to work on their choice of problem area.

    • Submit a 90s video pitch. An organisation can submit a 90 second video pitch that we will play at the beginning of the hackathon to raise participant awareness about a specific problem that AI could help address. Alternatively, if you don't have time to send a video, send whatever you can. Send pitches to hello@moreneta.org

  • What options do you offer for sponsorship?

    We offer a few options:

    • Sponsor a prize for the winning team's members.

      • This can be cash, or in-kind prize

    • Sponsor a specific category prize. E.g. <Your Company Name> Literacy Prize, or <Your Company Name> Housing People Prize.

      • This will incentivize participants to work on a problem and solution in your particular area.

    Email hello@moreneta.org for more details.

  • How do I become a mentor or judge on the day?

Email hello@moreneta.org and send your details. We are in the final stages of selecting our mentors and judges.
