Description

AI introduction with Tyrone Tangata-Makiri & Kamilla Witehira

AI is already shaping how we work, communicate, learn and make decisions often without us realising it.

This practical and interactive session helps participants build confidence navigating AI and emerging technologies in a way that feels relevant to their mahi, organisation and communities.

Together we'll explore:

  • What AI actually is and how it works in everyday language

  • Where AI is already showing up in the tools and systems we use

  • Practical opportunities and use cases relevant to social sector and community facing mahi

  • Risks, privacy considerations and ethical questions

  • What the future may hold and how to prepare for it

  • No technical background or prior AI experience is required. Whether you are curious, cautious or already experimenting with AI, this session is designed to meet you where you are.

About the facilitators

Tyrone Tangata-Makiri (Cook Islands, Māori) has a background in Creative Technologies, Community Development and Business Development. He co-leads Second Half, supporting organisations and communities to navigate AI with confidence and make sense of what is changing around them.

He's a father of two, a loyal Wahs and Minnesota Timberwolves fan and just as comfortable in a deep kōrero as he is with a plate of ika mata. At his core, he believes in people choosing their own path unapologetically.

Whether in business, community or life, Tyrone is passionate about helping others move with clarity, back themselves and live what is true to them.

Ko Kamilla Witehira tōku ingoa.

Māmā ki a Lake rāua ko Wolf, partner in life and business to Tyrone Tangata-Mākiri and co-founder of Second Half.

After more than 15 years in fashion and corporate retail leadership, Kamilla was known for many things, but being tech-savvy wasn't one of them. She happily avoided Excel spreadsheets and if someone needed technical support, says she was probably the last person they'd call.

Kamilla says, “Today, I help organisations and communities navigate AI by translating it into everyday language, raising AI civics across Aotearoa and supporting people to understand how AI may shape our workplaces, communities and future.

I believe everyone should have a voice in shaping how AI impacts our lives and building a shared understanding of these technologies is one of the most important opportunities of our time.”
