AICD Governance Foundations for Not-for-Profit Directors
Delivered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) in partnership with Alpine Valleys Community Leadership (AVCL) and Goulburn Murray Community Leadership (GMCL.)
This one-day course introduces the core responsibilities, risks, and opportunities of not-for-profit governance. Designed to build confidence and clarity, it equips participants with practical tools to support effective decision-making and participation on not-for-profit boards and committees.
Participants who complete the 2 modules receive an AICD Certificate of Completion for each module, along with access to the recorded webinar The Role of the Not-for-Profit Director . The course also offers the option to apply for AICD membership (additional cost.)
Who Should Attend
Ideal for individuals currently serving, or considering a role, on a not-for-profit board or committee. No prior governance training is required.
Program Overview
Participants will explore key duties, decision-making responsibilities, and the strategic role of directors through two core modules:
Duties and Responsibilities of the Not-for-Profit Director
Through understanding a director’s role in establishing and exercising effective governance practices, participants will develop a solid foundation to make more effective decisions that minimise personal risk and maximise their contribution.
Examine the duties and responsibilities of directors in NFP organisations
Outline the role of the regulatory authorities in the NFP sector
Appreciate the potential personal liability and rights of directors
Compare the role of directors in NFP organisations with the role of directors in the commercial sector
Identify criteria for measuring achievements in NFP organisations
Strategy and Risk for the Not-for-Profit Director
Minimise personal liability and safeguard the long-term success of the organisation by learning to more effectively monitor strategy and manage risk as a director.
Recognise the importance of vision, purpose, and values of the organisation
Explain the role of the board in developing strategy
Establish the link between strategy and risk management, risk culture and effective leadership
Outline the board’s role in risk oversight, monitoring and management
Explain risk appetite and how this affects board decisions
