Event description

Tour of productive urban permaculture garden

Fiona Buining and Michael Wilson from Ainslie Urban Farm have been growing an astounding amount of food on their suburban block for many years. Within this small area, they grow vegetables, fruit and berries, as well as keeping chickens, rabbits and bees. This tour is a chance to see the techniques and systems that they use to produce fruit and vegetables in Canberra’s soil and climate. Some of the methods you’ll observe in action include animal tractors, soil improvement, bed preparation and composting.

About the Facilitator

Fiona Buining is passionate about growing plants, especially food plants and is inspired to create pathways for future food growers in urban areas. She and her husband Michael have used permaculture principles to design their urban farm in Ainslie with over 50 fruit trees, nuts, berries, vegetables, two beehives, chickens and working rabbits that help prepare garden beds.

Fiona was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2020 to investigate urban farm ventures that provide vocational pathways for aspiring food growers. Fiona believes that growing good food is one of the most positive actions people can do for their own health and to heal the planet.
