Wed, 2 Jul, 10am - 4pm AEST

Event description

Copyright – it touches on almost all areas of practice in libraries and archives, yet many do not feel confident in dealing with it on a day to day basis. Recognising the need, the Australian Libraries and Archives Copyright Coalition (ALACC) continues to provide copyright training to members and non-members nationwide.

This training aims to arm librarians, archivists and information professionals with the knowledge and skills to tackle copyright in their day-to-day roles within collecting institutions.

Content

Two sessions will be run between 10 am and 4 pm.

Two sessions will be held which are designed to cater to attendees with different levels of knowledge and experience. They are designed to work as discrete sessions or as a single full-day copyright primer.

Sessions

  • Copyright Essentials (morning) – intended for those who want to learn or brush up on their copyright basics.
  • Copyright Extended (afternoon) – looks more in-depth at key copyright issues in small groups using Copyright the Card Game – Australian Edition. This session assumes either a base knowledge of copyright or attendance at the morning session.

The day is designed so that you can attend any of the sessions individually or combine them for a fuller program. They will be held in the same location, with a break for lunch in between.

Please register for all sessions you plan to attend – places fill up fast. Catering is provided and there are a number of cafés in walking distance.

Cost

$70 full day / $35 half day for ALACC member organisations.

$300 full day / $150 half-day non-member attendees.

Full day program

Copyright Essentials – 10 am–12:30 pm

10:00 am – A short introduction to copyright

This session provides the foundations of copyright and the key copyright issues to consider as a library or archive professional. It will include a quick run through of the basics including: what is the purpose and history of copyright? What materials are protected? What rights do copyright owners enjoy? How long does copyright last?

11:30 am – What can you do with copyright material?

We will look at the copyright exceptions and copyright licensing. We will answer questions such as: What are the library and archive exceptions? What is section 200AB and how can I rely on it? How do you obtain a licence?

12:30 pm – Lunch break

Copyright Extended – 1:30–4:00 pm

1:30 pm – Copyright in practice using Copyright the Card Game – Australian Edition

The afternoon session provides a practical exploration of copyright issues relevant to libraries and archives. For this practical session we will engage in small groups with copyright scenarios using Copyright the Card Game – Australian Edition.
