Alchemy of Magic Systems with Petra Sully

Are you looking to create a magic system steeped in folklore and legend? Want to know how a magic system fits within a larger narrative or world?

In this workshop, you will:

• Draw on the magic of yesteryear to build a magic system within your world

• Learn how to link folklore and legend to your plot and characters

• Learn the role of magic in speculative fiction and how it changes the narrative

• Leave the workshop with the bones of a magic system or a deeper understanding of an existing one.

About the Facilitator:

Petra is an Indian, Australian writer, whose work earned awards from the KSP Writers’ Centre and high commendation from Meniscus. She was published in MindFood and Words of the Park and spent the last few years writing a manuscript (unpublished) which taught her to value planning. In 2025, she was awarded the Faber Academy scholarship to write a speculative novel.
