Event description

Don't miss this intimate night of raw original folk music and fingerstyle guitar as Alec Randles makes his debut appearance in Newcastle/Mulubinba (at Theydy's), on the first stop of his east coast tour to launch his new single 'Peace of Mind' with the amazing Gr9lin kicking the night off.

Alec Randles is an Australian fingerstyle guitarist and singer-songwriter, infusing backgrounds in Celtic, Roots & Blues guitar with contemporary folk music and thought-provoking lyricism. This diverse influence has seen Randles play a plethora of shows across Australia, the United States and New Zealand, spanning venues from sold-out theatres in Australia to street corners in Kansas City, USA.

Withdrawing from the music scene during the pandemic years, Randles has since been relentlessly pulled back to the rawness and authenticity of performing - such that he has quickly picked up where he left off as an emerging artist. He has since embarked on a successful tour across New Zealand (selling out his debut show in Auckland) and Western Australia, and been invited to perform at folk festivals and take support slots for the likes of Kim Churchill, Daniel Champagne, ARIA award winning artist Jeff Lang and King Tide.

"Incredible and Inspiring" - Kim Churchill

"An amazing set" - Daniel Champagne

"Magnificent and beautiful" - Triple J

"A young gun on the guitar" - Michael Fix (3x Golden Guitar Awardee)

Gr9lin is the solo endeavour of Newcastle artist Caitlin O’Reilly. Born and raised in the steel city, gr9lin first cut her teeth with local bands, touring the east coast to the National Folk Festival, up to Magnetic Island and everywhere inbetween.

In 2015, joining the EU/US leg with international touring band Underscore Orkestra essentially gifted a singing masterclass. It was here, gigging every night for 5 months and sleeping under pool tables, that gr9lin developed both the vocal control and finesse that are hallmarks of her live performance, and a solid love of good times.

Along with her other original projects Ocean Hearts and Club Graeme, this year saw the hard-launch of gr9lin - a home for wayward songs and ideas - and the release of her first single, Saltwater, co-written with local artist Duncan Woods.

After years of wandering, gr9lin is now firmly settled in the Newcastle scene, to make sure it stays weird. You’re equally likely to see her on a festival main stage, or playing in someone’s back shed at 5am. A gatherer of stories and strange times, gr9lin’s music explores connection and community, and asks the question: “how big can one tiny life be?”
