Allies in Systemic Advocacy - Information Session (Online)


Event description

This online session will provide information about the upcoming Allies for Systemic Advocacy series commencing later this year.

WorkUP Queensland is pleased to be able to offer the  Allies for Systemic Advocacy, an 18-month program learning  cohort, delivered through Global Alliance for Women’s Safety. 

The facilitators, Melissa Scaia and Laura Williams will provide a snapshot of the program and will be available to answer any questions you may have.

The Approach of Allies for Systemic Advocacy:

  • This 18-month cohort process will have each organisation’s participants learning from faculty and others in the field, sharing their experiences, and applying the 5 Essential Skills of Systemic Advocacy on a project you select.
  • Each organisation will work on their self-selected project throughout the 18 months with available office hours with faculty available for support.
  • Each organisation will try out the 5 Essential Skills of Systemic Advocacy between the online sessions. 

This is for you if your organisation is interested undertakes systems advocacy. Numbers for the program are limited and likely to be restricted to 2 or 3 per organisation, with preference given to Integrated Services Response services.

This program and information session is reserved only for WorkUP Queensland Target Group. If you do not meet our eligibility requirements, we reserve the right to decline your registration.

        Any leaders/practitioners who are interested in implementing string systems advocacy and participating in an 18-month learning cohort.

        Please note: This information session is for specialist domestic and family violence, sexual violence or women’s health and wellbeing services funded by the Office for Women's Safety and Violence Prevention, Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

        About the facilitators

        Melissa (Petrangelo) Scaia, MPA

        •   Co-founder of Global Alliance for Women’s Safety and Equality  
        •   Domestic Violence Trainer and Consultant for UN Women and Domestic Abuse Project in Minneapolis, MN
        •   Co-founder and author of Domestic Violence Turning Points
        •   Former Director of International Training at Global Rights for Women

        Former executive director of Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs (DAIP) also known as “the Duluth Model”. Prior to working in Duluth she was the executive director of Advocates for Family Peace (AFFP) for 17 years, a local domestic violence advocacy program. She has also trained internationally on Integrated Responses and has led and organized three Coordinated Community Responses (CCR) to address domestic violence in Minnesota.  She also has trained internationally on perpetrator programmes while also co-facilitating groups for men who batter and women who use violence for nearly 25 years.

        Laura Williams

        Laura Williams is a transformative force in person-centered advocacy, driven by a deep commitment to ensuring that individuals are granted the opportunity to lead lives that are full, meaningful, and imbued with justice. As the co-owner of ICARUS.Common Sense, Laura is the Director, Management and Strategy, spearheading initiatives that create lasting change and empower those she serves.

        Throughout her career, Laura has focused on working with youth and their families, recognizing the power of supporting and uplifting the younger generation. Her dedication extends to championing the rights and well-being of women who have experienced the profound trauma of sexual violence. Through her tireless efforts, Laura strives to provide a path toward healing and recovery for those affected.

        Beyond her pivotal role at ICARUS, Laura Williams is also a Managing Partner in the Global Alliance for Women’s Safety & Equality, where she shapes policies and practices that protect the rights and dignity of women around the world. With recent and current contracts in the Republic of Georgia, Haiti, Bahamas, Philippines, Greece, and the State of North Dakota, Laura uses her Full-Color lens to inform her work in the complex adaptive systems needed to support survivors of sexual assault.
