Ally training: UTS Student Leaders Edition

This event has passed Get tickets

    Event description

Breaking the Binary ally training is a special edition of the Ally admission process created for UTS Student Leaders. It will cover both Breaking the Binary training and Ally training concepts. All of which aim to equip participants with the skills and confidence to be active LGBTQIA+ allies in the UTS community.

    What is an UTS ally?

Allyship is a verb not a noun. An action, not a label. Allyship is an ongoing practice of transferring the benefits of your privilege to those who lack it. It involves proactive learning, unlearning and accountability. The UTS Ally Program sets out to develop a visible network of empathetic people who are allies of LGBTIQA+ students and staff.

What is expected of a UTS Ally?

Allies are not experts about matters of sexuality and gender identity. They are people who support the University's vision of equity and access and inclusiveness, and relevance and responsibility to our communities. As a UTS Ally other staff members or students may reach out to you for support or for referrals to services and information. Being a UTS Ally is not a counselling role. Rather it is one about raising visibility, creating inclusive spaces and being committed to learning.

What will happen after the training?

As a UTS Ally your contact details (name, email) will be listed online here for staff and students to be able to contact you. You will receive a UTS Pride lanyard, the Ally e-signature logo to add to your email sign-off, be added to the Ally channel on Teams and be invited to various events throughout the year.

What will be covered in the session?

In the 3-hour session we will revise key frameworks via group discussions and small group activities and scenarios. We will cover any questions that you have and go over relevant UTS policies, procedures and support to help you feel equipped and supported to be a UTS Ally.
