Ally@UNSW 'Lunch & Learn' - In conversation with Christy Newman & Teddy Cook
Event description
Hosted by LGBTIQ+ Champion Dr Bridget Haire, Senior Research Fellow at the Kirby Institute, this Ally@UNSW Lunch (BYO!) & Learn will explore the topic of gender, sex and sexuality indicators (sometimes referred to as statistical indicators, the measure(s) upon which data is collected in research, forms and surveys).
Dr Haire, in conversation with health, gender and sexuality social researcher Christy Newman, Associate Professor at the Centre for Social Research in Health, and Associate Dean (Enterprise, Impact and Engagement) for UNSW Arts and Social Sciences, and Teddy Cook, adjunct lecturer with the Kirby Institute and Manager, Trans & Gender Diverse Health Equity for ACON, will discuss how including indicators that adequately capture gender, sex and sexual diversity is an important act of recognition of and respect for LGBTIQ+ people.
Those who do not identify as heterosexual, cisgender or endosex often feel invisible. When data collection practices are unbiased and inclusive of people with diverse sex characteristics, gender identities, and sexual orientations, they communicate to LGBTIQ+ people that their lived experience matters. When they are not inclusive, they can marginalise LGBTIQ+ people and further perpetuate biases and misconceptions about the diversity that exists in all populations.
For the Q&A, Allies will have the opportunity to ask questions via sli.do. Link will be provided in the reminder email.
