Alternative Firing – Obvara, Horsehair and Feather Firing Workshop
Event description
Prepare yourself for a sensory adventure like no other !
Join us for a captivating workshop where speed, excitement, and a touch of aroma converge to create a truly unforgettable experience.
First Obvara firing an ancient technique hailing from Eastern Europe, often referred to as Baltic Raku.Bisque fired pots are taken from the raku kiln while red hot and then plunged into a bucket of the Obvara brew which is a simple mix of yeast, flour and water. The pots then writhe and squirm and immediately take on the colour of the brew. Then a quick dip into cold water to stop further “cooking” and they’re done! No waiting for three days for the kiln to cool down - not even any waiting while the pots to reduce in a bucket of sawdust - Obvara is immediately gratifying and intensely exciting.
Then Horsehair & Feather firing is a contemporary variation of the Raku firing technique but instead of
using a glaze we will apply horse hair or feathers to burning hot pot. Leaving a carbon trace on the ceramic.
The contrast between the dark lines and the white clay surface is
what makes this firing visually striking.
Perfect for the impatient potter!
