British Music Hall
“Let’s all go to the Music Hall.
Where the show is gay and bright.
Let’s all go to the Music Hall,
Where the stars are twinkling twice a night.
Whether you sit in the Gallery, the Circle, or the Pit,
Whether you sit in a red plush Stall,
When your busy day is done,
And you want to have some fun
Let’s all go to the Music Hall”.
An Evening at a British Music Hall has been delighting audiences for over 50 years, with performances spanning the Lehigh Valley, New York City, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. For 48 of those years, its unofficial home has been Godfrey Daniels.
Rooted in the rich tradition of 19th-century British variety entertainment, the Music Hall was the heart of working- and middle-class amusement from the 1850s through the post–World War I era, eventually evolving into what we know as “Variety.” These lively shows featured everything from sentimental ballads to comic songs, theatrical sketches, novelty acts, and even trained animals. American Vaudeville shared much of its DNA with the British Music Hall, often showcasing the same types of performances—and even some of the same songs, like “I’m Henery the Eighth, I Am” and “After the Ball.”
This production began in 1974 as a creative offshoot of the old-time string band, The Shimerville Sheiks. What started as a few spirited performances quickly grew into a full-scale theatrical experience, with an ever-expanding cast of performers passionate about reviving this historic art form. Many of the original cast members not only performed but also made up the live orchestra.
The show’s founder—raised in London and immersed in Music Hall songs from childhood—carried a lifelong dream of bringing a full-scale Music Hall production to life. Through years of dedicated research at institutions like the British Library, EMI Archives, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, he amassed a vast archive of sheet music and rare material. That passion continues to shine through every performance.
Whether you’re nostalgic for the classics or discovering this genre for the first time, An Evening at a British Music Hall offers a charming, cheeky, and thoroughly entertaining window into a beloved tradition that still knows how to bring down the house.
