WHO: Mark Rubin, a founding member of the seminal Bad Livers and stalwart presence in the klezmer music world, has carved out a decades-long career at the intersection of American folk traditions and unapologetic cultural commentary. His music fuses American roots, klezmer, country blues, and protest songcraft, often punctuated with sharp humor and unflinching takes on Jewish identity, American history, and the fractured state of our national discourse.
While his work has earned accolades for its fearless authenticity, Rubin’s material has not been without controversy. His songs take on subjects many shy away from—anti-Semitism, white nationalism, and the politics of belonging in America. Some critics have bristled at his blunt delivery, but Rubin insists his role is not to smooth edges, but to make audiences confront uncomfortable truths through the familiar lens of the American folk tradition.
Who Else: Alex Kramer organizes West Philly Square Dances and will be playing banjo and fiddle, possibly with a friend or two to open the evening—Come early!
