An Introduction to Guidance for Gender-Affirming Care for Mental Health

This is an ACT Child and Youth Mental Health Sector Alliance Community of Practice event; delivered in partnership with A Gender Agenda  

The Guidance was developed as a collaboration between the Office for Mental Health and Wellbeing, The Office of LGBTIQ+ Affairs, ACT Health Directorate, A Gender Agenda and Meridian. It is a first of its kind in Australia and has been designed for providers of mental health care to deliver their services in a gender affirming way and support the specific needs of trans and/or gender diverse people. This training session is facilitated by two lived-experience trans/gender diverse trainers from A Gender Agenda.

For people working in community or government programs with young people, across the mental health, health or broader child, youth and family services sector

  • Learning outcomes:
    • Identify resources for best practice healthcare pathways for T+GD community members
    • Understand barriers to T+GD healthcare and the impact of these on mental health outcomes
    • Understand and use appropriate language
    • Understand options for recourse and referrals for T+GD people
    • Understand and differentiate between the components of the LGBTIQA+ acronym
    • Understand overlap and divergence of T+GD experiences, including approaches to gender affirmation (medical, legal, social)
