An Introduction to Phonics - an interactive talk / workshop
Community Centre, Port Macquarie, NSW
Event description
This workshop will be of interest to parents, teachers and others who want a basic practical understanding of how phonics works. Phonics instruction involves teaching the relationship or code between speech sounds and the written letters used to represent them. This will be a practical guide so that you can better help your children learn to read and spell.
The talk will cover:
- The sounds that the single letters of the alphabet represent. Some single letters code for more than one speech sound e.g. ‘c’ and ‘g’.
- Letters that work together: Sometimes 2 or more letters work together to code for one sound eg: sh, ar.
- How to break words into their constituent sounds – needed for spelling
- How to blend sounds together to form words – needed for reading.
My name is Carol Baker. I am a retired speech pathologist who worked for many years with young children with speech, language, reading and spelling difficulties. I now give talks and workshops for parents, teachers and the general public.
