Event description

Join us for an interactive workshop for Choral Directors and Singers alike, where we'll take you through the best-practice in vocal technique to help you get the most out of your choral journey, whether you are a director, a singer, or that reliable member who gets called on every week to run the warm up.

Good vocal technique can fall through the cracks when you’re singing in or conducting a choir. We know that it would make our choir sound better but it can be low on the list of priorities when you have repertoire to learn and performances to prepare for. Join Dr Naomi Cooper as she helps you learn how to care for your voice and others’, and how to teach or practice vocal technique in choral contexts. This workshop is designed to help choral directors, choral singers and those of you who are called on to step-in to run the warm-up, take the session, run a section or take a leadership role. The day will comprise of a 1.5-hour presentation, followed by a 1-hour workshop. This is an in-person only event not to be missed. Group booking discounts available, tickets limited.

PRESENTER:
Dr Naomi Cooper
Naomi is a freelance choir director with extensive experience working with children’s, school, community and university choirs. She currently conducts Kooskõlas (a nationwide Estonian-Australian choir), Sydney Alterna Choir (an a cappella community choir in Newtown), Angelo Singers (a high school chamber choir at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College), the Chris Davis Choir (for people with Parkinson’s disease), and Village Voices (a retirement village choir). She also conducts public workshops, is a guest conductor for community singing events, and works as a choral clinician.

Naomi’s choir work has taken her to Estonia, where Kooskõlas performed at Laulupidu (a large song festival with a choir of 30,000 singers) and to the USA on a gospel choir tour as assistant musical director to Tony Backhouse. Naomi’s PhD investigated the teaching and learning practices in Australian community choirs and her research has been published in journal articles, book chapters and conference proceedings internationally.
An adjunct research fellow at Griffith University’s Creative Arts Research Institute, she is part of a team studying vocal pedagogy for transgender singers. She has also taught choir and vocal studies at Macquarie University and Western Sydney University. Naomi is currently NSW & ACT chapter president of ANCA, vice-president of Kodály NSW and an ANATS NSW committee member. Alongside her choir work Naomi runs a busy private studio teaching singing and guitar.
