    Event description

With over 5,000 years of history, Chinese is a fascinating language. Chinese is one of the only pictographic based languages that has evolved to still be used in the modern day.

In this workshop, you will the basics of how Chinese characters are formed, as well as how to decode them based on their pictographic radicals.

You will also have the opportunity to practice writing them stroke by stroke in the correct order using soft brush pens and box paper.

So come and be curious about the history and culture of the Chinese language and its characters. It will be a rewarding evening, and may even spark a life-long passion, just like your teacher Danni.

    What will we cover?

In this workshop we will explore:

    • History of Chinese characters
    • How some ancient Chinese characters have changed over time to become the modern day script
    • The main Chinese radicals (that give clues to the meaning of words e.g. the radical for water is found in most words that have something to do with water such as "island", "tears", "beverage", "sea" etc).
    • Step-by-step guidance on how to write some Chinese characters in the correct order using soft brush pens and box paper.

Danni (she/her) a Chinese Teacher in a Primary and Secondary school (P-12) where I teach Chinese Language, History and Culture. While not Chinese, Danni fell in love with the langauge and its characters when she began learning it at the age of 8.

Danni's studies continued through high school, VCE and University, seeing her move to Shanghai for further Univeristy langauge programs, and later to Guangdong for a year working as an English teacher.

Danni has always been captivated by the Chinese language and the sheer beauty of its Chinese characters - with so
much depth and meaning behind them! She would find great pleasure in introducing you to Chinese characters!
