Animal Advocates One Day Course (12-17yrs)
Animal Advocates
From caring about animals to creating change for them.
Animal Advocates is an interactive school holiday program for young people who want to take their interest in animals to the next level.
Rather than simply learning how to care for animals, they will explore how animals experience the world, how we can recognise and respect their choices, and how people and communities can help create better welfare outcomes.
What will young people experience?
Animal Welfare Investigation
Explore real-world animal welfare scenarios and use the Five Domains of Animal Welfare to consider an animal’s physical, behavioural and emotional wellbeing.
Decode Animal Behaviour
Observe animal body language and behaviour and investigate what animals may be communicating about comfort, stress, choice and the need for space.
Choice, Agency & Ethical Care
Challenge traditional ideas about interacting with animals and consider an important question: just because we can do something with an animal, does it mean we should?
Behind the Scenes at AWLQ
Discover how AWLQ supports animals and people and explore some of the reasons companion animals may need help, care or rehoming. Hear what a day in the life of some of AWLQ's team looks like.
Animal Welfare Problem-Solving
Work in teams to tackle practical welfare challenges, including enrichment, behaviour, pet retention and community animal welfare issues.
Become an Advocate
Turn knowledge into action by developing an idea, campaign or message that could help improve outcomes for animals and the people who care for them.

Small groups, meaningful experiences
Places are limited to help us provide a safe, supportive and engaging experience for every participant and to ensure the welfare of animals involved in the program.
Age requirements are applied to ensure activities are developmentally appropriate and that young people attending receive the best possible experience.
Where live animals form part of the program, experiences will be carefully managed and welfare-focused. Participants will learn that good animal advocacy includes recognising when an animal wants to engage and when the best choice is to observe, wait or give them space.
Please be aware that this program takes place within a busy working shelter environment, which may lead to instances of overstimulation such as dogs barking, strong odours, and the presence of other excited participants. Additionally, part of the program will include educational sessions held in a classroom setting. If your young person will require additional support to thrive in the program there is the possibility to purchase a support person ticket to assist on the day.
We are committed to making our events accessible to everyone. If you require an accommodation or service to fully participate please email educationofficer@awlq.org.au
