Annwen Roberts Quintet
Annwen Roberts is a young improvising violinist from Lutruwita/Tasmania now based in Naarm/Melbourne, whose musical roots are in jazz and folk, utilising the timbral and textural qualities of the violin to create a new lead voice.
Studying at the Victorian College of The Arts over the last four years, Annwen has combined these influences to create a whirlwind of lyrical and intense improvised music.
Annwen just released her debut folk/jazz album, SKY OMENS; a work of collaborative improvisation, raw emotion and instrumental prowess.
The band on the album comprises emerging talents in Roberts (violin), Jack Dobson (bass), Caleb Wilson (piano), Alex Siderov (drums), and from Nipaluna/Hobart, Elijah Davies (guitar).
SKY OMENS explores looking to the clouds for comfort and guidance through trauma, hardship and loss; painting a picture of the skies that grounded Annwen in her journey.
“Roberts’ distinctive compositions create ample space for each contributor to shine through the intricately layered clouds, both as accompanists and soloists.” — Helen Svoboda
