Caution - burnout ahead? Emotional labour and burnout in the provision of mental health care.
Anthony Joffe, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Black Dog Institute
As service workers, mental health clinicians may be required to engage in emotional labour to ensure the emotions they express at work are appropriate. This may involve amplifying certain emotions and/or shielding other emotions from public view. However, understanding how psychologists engage in emotional labour (and what effects this might contribute to) is a relatively new area of research. This seminar provides a broad overview of emotional labour, answering questions including: What is emotional labour and how does it manifest in psychotherapy? How might it relate to clinician burnout and wellbeing? Can clinicians manage their emotions sustainably? This seminar will also provide some general information on identifying and managing early signs of burnout, and in doing so, aims to equip you with practical knowledge you can use throughout your career span. This will be an interactive seminar that involves learning, reflection, and sharing (if comfortable).
