Appreciative Inquiry: a strength-based approach to community engagement

As part of the Carnegie Community Engagement Network offerings, we invite you to take part in the workshop "Appreciative Inquiry: a strength-based approach to community engagement" led by Mitra Gusheh, Glebe Youth Service

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a narrative-rich approach that can help teams, communities and organisations, come together to create a shared vision or undertake collectively informed action. Beginning with the generation of knowledge about what works, the methodology endeavours to deepen our understanding of system strengths and their preconditions. This knowledge can help us determine what to invest in, or where and how to act, to get more of what works – improving outcomes across a system.

This workshop will:

Introduce you to Appreciative Inquiry and the theories that underpin this approach.
Explore the 5 generic processes as one approach to applying Appreciative Inquiry as a practice methodology.
Strengthen your capacity to use appreciative, strength-based and participatory approaches as part of your engagement practice more broadly.

ABOUT MITRA

Mitra Gusheh is a social impact practitioner with 20 years of experience across the social and higher education sectors. She currently holds the position of CEO at the Glebe Youth Service, leading place-based community development. Prior to taking up her current role as the CEO of the Glebe Youth Service, Mitra was the Executive Manager, Social Impact at the University of Technology Sydney’s Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion. Here, she was responsible for developing the institution’s Social Impact Framework and led the community engagement portfolio for the university. Previous to this, Mitra worked for a range of not-for-profit organisations where she was responsible for the strategic design, development and implementation of large-scale social change programs. This included establishing Oxfam Australia’s national youth program, the design and implementation of an advocacy program on child rights in Sri Lanka, and the design and implementation of an ICT-project in partnership with UNESCO in Nepal.

ABOUT GLEBE YOUTH SERVICE

Glebe Youth Service (GYS) is a community organisation that has operated for 32 years. The service works to support young people to reach their full potential. To achieve this, the organisation takes a systems approach, working with young people, their family and their community, to improve collective outcomes.
