April GLAM Networking Breakfast
Event description
Our first 2025 GLAM Breakfast speaker is Dr Kieran Meany.
Dr Kieran Meaney is a recent addition to the South Australian Museum team, and is delighted to take on the role of Assistant Collections Manager, Mineralogy.
Kieran graduated with a PhD in Geology from the University of Adelaide. Their work largely revolved around the structural mapping, stratigraphy, and geochronology of the metamorphic basement rocks in the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu peninsula. Kieran has also spent time at the University of New England, NSW, as a lecturer in introductory and economic geology units, and as a science outreach educator. Kieran is passionate about communicating Earth science to anyone that will listen and has been involved in a wide range of public outreach and engagement programs. They are excited to have the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the SA Museum and mineralogy in South Australia.
We look forward to hearing Dr Meany present on The David Vince Mineral Collection.
In 2024, the South Australian Museum purchased a high quality private mineral collection from Dr David Vince. The collection represents the single largest mineral acquisition in the history of the South Australian Museum. The specimens include rare ‘critical’ minerals from China, including many from localities that are now inaccessible. The collection is also rich in Australian zeolite minerals, as well as gold-bearing minerals from Fiji. All of these minerals are highly valuable for Australian research and mineral exploration. This presentation will take a closer look at some of the treasures of this new addition to the mineral collection and explore the logistics of how to move thousands of delicate rocks across state lines.
