Arabic music workshop (Maqam Nahawand)
Event description
This workshop is designed for musicians looking to deepen their understanding of Arabic music. Through a hands-on, interactive approach, we will explore the intricacies of maqam-based music, focusing on practical applications and improvisation. This session will focus on Maqam Nahawand.
Together, we will explore:
- Ajnas and Maqams: Break down the essential building blocks of maqams, studying their unique phrases, characteristic modulations, and emotional nuances.
- Improvisation and Ornamentation: Develop techniques for taqsim (melodic improvisation), learning how to shape phrases with traditional ornamentation and fluid transitions between maqams.
- Application in Performance: Understand how maqams and improvisation integrate into songs and musical pieces.
This is a hands-on session, and all musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments. Vocalists are also welcome, as we will explore maqam phrasing through both instrumental and vocal perspectives.
The workshop will be led by Camille El Feghali, a Lebanese multi-instrumentalist and music producer based between Beirut and Melbourne. As the founder of Tarabeat, Camille blends traditional Middle Eastern music with electronic sounds, bringing a modern perspective to the music of his heritage. His expertise draws from his work with the AMAAR Foundation (Arabic Music Archiving and Research), dedicated to the preservation of Arabic music records.
This session is best suited for musicians, from beginners to experienced players. Whether you're new to maqams or looking to refine your improvisation skills, all instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome.
