Description

Join hosts Sugra Panvelwala, AIA and Elizabeth Hawks McBride, AIA, for another edition of Architecture Matters. Our evening of discussion will be centered around the idea of Critical Regionalism in architecture.

When theorist Kenneth Frampton published his seminal essay on Critical Regionalism in 1983, he called for an "architecture of resistance"—one that adopts progressive modern technologies while remaining deeply rooted in site topography, climate, natural light, and regional craft. Decades later these concepts are seeing a renewed interest considering importance of climate responsive design and the value of placemaking.

What constitutes the architecture of a place? Does California provide examples that aid in this discussion? We will explore these questions and more in our next Architecture Matters. We will have presentations by Pauly De Bartolo (Lecturer, Department of Design, CSUS) and Saxon Sigerson, AIA (Sigerson Architects) followed by an open discussion led by Sugra Panvelwala, AIA.
