Archbishop's Certificate 5 Module Intensive September 2026
Description
The Archbishop’s Certificate is free education for lay people in the parishes of the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide. It is designed to support the development of lay leaders in areas that will lead to spiritual growth, encourage sharing faith, build practical skills that serve faith communities, and equip people to use gifts and skills with confidence.
This Archbishop’s Certificate 5-day intensive, held from 22 - 28 September 2026, 9am - 4pm each day, at St Barnabas College, consists of five one-day modules:
1. Being Anglican
2. The Lay Leader’s Toolbox
3. Handling the Bible
4. Understanding Pastoral Care: a tender care that transforms lives
5. Enriching Spirituality: finding God in our everyday lives
This intensive is an alternative to the established four-week mode of study. Each module is the same, whether studied as a one-day or four-week course. People are invited to study one, more or all modules, depending on their preferences and needs. Students who complete any four modules in any combination of study mode, will be awarded the Archbishop's Certificate.
To complete an enrolment, students must enrol in each of their chosen sessions separately on the tickets page of this site.
Morning tea is provided each day. Students are advised to bring their own lunch or they can purchase lunch from a nearby cafe. There is no onsite parking available for students.

Being Anglican Tuesday 22 September 2026
Taught by Ms Caralyn Lammas, from St Barnabas College This module introduces students to the main characteristics of Anglicanism through the lens of worship and spirituality, church life, and mission. Students will examine the ways in which various strands of the tradition have developed historically, and what it means to be Anglican in Australia today. On completion of this module, students will be able to: • Identify key characteristics of Anglicanism • Outline the historical roots of different traditions within Anglicanism • Demonstrate how Anglican understandings of mission relate to ministry in a parish, school or chaplaincy context • Express their own identity and vocation as Australian Anglicans

Lay Leader's Toolbox Wednesday 23 September 2026
Taught by Ms Caralyn Lammas, from St Barnabas College This module is for lay leaders throughout the diocese who want to learn: • leading Morning and Evening Prayer and other non-Eucharist worship. • reading from the Bible and speaking aloud, writing and reading intercessions, and using a microphone and an AV system. • how parish governance works, chairing meetings and facilitating group decision-making. • preaching the Gospel and generally. Participants will be able to ask questions, share experiences and build the confidence and skills needed to lead services.

Handling the Bible Thursday 24 September 2026
Taught by Rev'd Dr Joan Riley This module is an introduction to the Bible, how we received it and how it speaks to us today. Participants will learn: • the Bible as we have received it • the Bible as communication: hearing and reading • the Bible in context • the great Biblical narrative • meaning and significance • the living word that speaks to us today

Understanding Pastoral Care Friday 25 September 2026
Taught by Rev’d Dr Gethzi Devasagayam, from St Luke's Church, Whitmore Square This module introduces pastoral care as essential for the holistic wellbeing of a person. It aims to prepare participants for providing a caring presence with competence and confidence. It covers basic biblical principles of pastoral care. It pays attention to skills pertinent to attentive listening and various possible pastoral responses. Participants will learn about the practice of pastoral care in differing contexts and cultures through the analysis of biblical and other texts and resources. Discussions based on case studies and role plays will aid this understanding. The module will prepare participants for the complexity of encountering difficult spiritual questions in the face of bitter experiences like trauma, death and bereavement.

Enriching Spirituality Monday 28 September 2026
Taught by Rev’d Canon Jenny Wilson, from St Peter's Cathedral In this course, we will explore ideas from Ignatian Spirituality. We will use the Examen, or Review of the Day, each week to begin our exploration of finding God in our everyday lives. We will spend time with methods of prayer that use scripture, particularly stories of Jesus found in the Gospels, such as lectio divina and imaginative prayer. We will ponder the question that Jesus asked Blind Bartimaeus, “What do you want me to do for you?”, finding there a rich source of nurture for our lives of prayer. We will look at Ignatian ways of reflecting on decisions that we need to make in everyday life and at times when profound discernment is needed. We will also explore ways of praying for others; intercessory prayer. A helpful book is The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life by James Martin SJ. (It is not necessary to own the book.)
