Event description

Join us in Shed 13 at Dock 2 to nimbly navigate our wire 'maze' (model coastline of Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent) with your own electronic hand-eye coordination tester!  In the days of sail a Mosquito Fleet of ketches worked these gulfs, their crews navigating the mud flats and sand bars of the smaller ports. You will discover if your eyes are sharp enough, and your hand on the helm is steady enough, to do the same without any 'mishaps'.

At this workshop you will:

  • Use stencils, hand tools and a glue gun to fabricate a platform from recycled cardboard.
  • Attach terminals, a battery pack and a piezo buzzer to the platform.
  • Use soldering equipment to inter-connect the electronic components - and to assemble the ‘wand’.
  • Attach our wire maze to your device, then move your wand around the maze while being LED-flashed and piezo-buzzed with each mishap with a mud flat or sand bar!
  • Record the speed and accuracy of your navigating - and see your improvement as you practice.
  • Bend your own wire maze into any shape you wish, then test it on your device.
  • Take your device home to frustrate others!

Age range: As some of the equipment and procedures used here may be unfamiliar to youngsters, we suggest at least 8 years of age - with adult assistance where needed.
