With spring in full bloom, we're thrilled to invite you to a fantastic early Friday evening filled with art, wine, and a strong community spirit to give back to those in need!

JusticeNet SA, in partnership with the Art Gallery of South Australia, is hosting our third annual Art for Justice fundraising event on Friday, 25 October 2024. This unique event serves to raise awareness about the importance of equal access to justice, as well as to bring together our community in support of this crucial cause.

The evening will commence with an exclusive after-hours tour of the gallery.

Julia Townsend, a contemporary Australian painter specialising in abstract art, is our 2024 Artist for Justice. During the event, Julia will take on the remarkable challenge of creating an artwork inspired by one of JusticeNet's recent success stories.

We are also thrilled to have the brilliant Elle Dawson-Scott as our event photographer, capturing the evening’s magic for all to enjoy.

There will be several other silent auctions throughout the evening, featuring a range of exceptional items and experiences. Stay tuned for more details as we reveal these exciting opportunities in the lead-up to the event.

Each guest will receive a limited edition fine art print of Julia's creation from the night. Additionally, there will be a silent auction (exclusive to attendees) for the opportunity to purchase the original piece. This is a rare chance for art enthusiasts to acquire one of Julia's works for a private collection, as she primarily focuses on public works and commissions.

All funds raised will go towards continuing JusticeNet's mission of connecting South Australians in need with free legal support.

JusticeNet SA is a not-for-profit legal service for South Australians in need. We help vulnerable people access the justice they deserve by empowering lawyers to give back through meaningful pro bono work. Our mission is to improve access to justice: via a pro bono clearing house and discrete task assistance. JusticeNet operates through three services - Pro Bono Connect, Federal Court Self Representation Service, and Homeless Legal. Two of these services depend entirely on fundraising efforts and private philanthropy to cover operational expenses. For every $1 raised, $10 of legal work is performed. Julia Townsend is a contemporary Australian painter working predominantly in abstraction. Her work features bright colour fields, hard-edge geometric abstraction and graphic line work, that reference contemporary architecture, the digital age, and the aesthetics of social systems. Julia is also focused on examining the dominant modes of production and consumption, and uses innovative painting techniques and creative processes to explore this. Furthermore, Julia is interested in abstraction as creating an open image that is beyond the boundaries of rational thought. She uses the presence of colour as the primary means of expression, alongside other pictorial elements. The field of abstraction grants Julia total risk, freedom and discipline that considers line, shape, colour and mass and how they interact with one another. Julia has studied fine art in both Australia and France, and has exhibited extensively.

Derek Pascoe is a saxophonist, composer and leading proponent of contemporary Australian improvised music. Over a diverse career spanning 50 years in music, Derek has forged a reputation as a unique and profound artist of genuine note. At the age of 17 he was a member of pop group Flintlock, who produced 5 albums and were featured weekly on UK national television including Top of the Pops and Tomorrow's People. Disenchanted by the pop music industry and seeking new artistic, and guided by a profound appreciation of artists including John Coltrane and Anthony Braxton and immersed in the vibrant 1970s and 80s European experimental scene, Derek forged a reputation for rigorous experimentalism and a commitment to free improvisation, contributing to London’s underground jazz movement. In 1998 Derek moved to Australia from London to complete a Master of Music at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide exploring performance and spontaneous improvisation techniques. Since 2000, he has lectured in Jazz Theory and Improvisation across the Jazz, Classical and Contemporary disciplines at the Elder Conservatorium and has become an integral member of the Australian creative music sector.

John Aué began his career in Adelaide as a guitarist, bass player, arranger and vocal group singer and moved to London in 1976. He regularly performed with the Ronnie Scott Quintet, Ray Ellington Quartet, the Ballet Rambert and played in a wide variety of styles. As well as live performances, his work included BBC broadcasts, ITV shows and commercial studio and film work. In 1983 he returned to Australia and made Sydney his home. He played with many of the jazz luminaries such as Don Burrows, James Morrison, George Golla, Judy Bailey and many more. Adelaide became home in 1999 and John has been active in Adelaide’s jazz, theatre, recording and cabaret scene. From 2000 he worked full time as a bass teacher and lecturer in Jazz Studies at the Elder Conservatorium and gained a Master of Music degree in composition in 2010. He retired from teaching in July 2019. Today, John continues to be involved in a variety of musical projects.
