    Event description

Design laureate and artist Carin Wilson talks about his career a studio furniture maker, sculptor, and educator.

Carin Wilson (Ngāti Awa, Tuhourangi) was recognised this year for his ongoing practice as a craftsman, artist & designer and named the inaugural recipient of the 2024 Te Tumu Toi Design Laureate Award.

In celebration, Wilson would like to recognise the contribution Ōtautahi Christchurch had on his early studio practice by inviting you to join him at Ravenscar House Museum as he delivers a brief walkthrough of his career.

A leading figure in Aotearoa New Zealand's craft movement from the 1970s to the 90s, Wilson’s career has been influenced by his connection with Māori narratives and the natural environment. This conne

ction has advanced Māori design through a variety of mediums, including hand-crafted furniture and large-scale public works.

This session will provide a unique opportunity to hear about how Wilson’s career has progressed from his beginnings in Christchurch, followed by a Q&A and an opportunity to see a piece of his work on display in Ravenscar House.
