Event description

The Glassworks Artist Talk series is an opportunity for artists in our Artistic Program to share their experiences and experimentations with the arts community in an informal presentation.
This public talk will be held in the Canberra Glassworks foyer with light refreshments available. Everyone is welcome and there are absolutely no silly questions. We are all here to learn.

TOM ROWNEY

Tom Rowney is an established glass artist specialising in glass blowing based at Canberra Glassworks. With over thirty years’ experience in the field, Tom is renowned as one of the most accomplished glass blowers in Australia. His practice is based on learning, refining, and adapting Venetian glass blowing processes in combination with his joy of making beautifully crafted objects. Tom continues to be sought after for teaching and fabrication projects by the leading glass studios and artists in Australia and overseas. His works have been collected by the National Gallery of Australia, National Glass Collection – Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Powerhouse Museum, Australian Catholic University Collection, and the Tacoma Museum of Glass (USA).

CHERYL EDWARDS

Cheryl Edwards is a Melbourne glass artist. She started her art journey as a studio potter. Changing mediums and switching to glass she graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Glass from Monash University. She then marinated for 17 years until she built her home studio. The Italian glass technique known as Murrini captivated her and she has spent her career developing this technique to compliment her vessels, creating beautiful intricate patterns in glass. Cheryl exhibited in Bulgaria in 2023 as part of The International Biennale of Glass, where her glass is in the permanent collection. That year she was also selected as a finalist for the prestigious Tom Malone Glass Prize. Cheryl has exhibited in the USA at the 2023 and 2024 Pilchuck Auction Gala were she also won prizes for her vessels. One of these awards facilitated a lifelong dream to study at Pilchuck Glass School on a scholarship in 2024.
