Growing an Art World by Dr Judy Hamilton
Event description
Join us for our July artist talk, Growing an Art World by Dr Judy Hamilton! For this artist talk, Judy will discuss how in 1887 three men formed the first organisation of artists in Brisbane with the aim of improving conditions for artists. Jenner, Wirth and Fristrom set up the Queensland Art Society with the aim of promoting and encouraging the cultivation of the fine arts through fellowship and an annual exhibition of their best work. Up until the appointment of a Director of the Queensland Art Gallery in 1949, the President of the RQAS was not an artist but was seen as the authority on all things art in the state. It was to the President of the RQAS that the Queensland Government turned for advice. It is through groups like the RQAS that Queensland built it's own art world.
This talk will be held at Petrie Terrace Gallery on Sunday, 28th of July, 10:30am to 12:30pm.
