"The Art of The Song" workshop, led by International jazz vocalist Hetty Kate, focuses on elevating stage performance and enhancing collaboration, with a particular emphasis on building confidence and developing a unique artistic style for both vocalists and front-person instrumentalists.
Throughout this session, participants will explore effective song selection, lyrical interpretation, and live arrangement techniques. The workshop emphasizes mastering stagecraft, from commanding the room and introducing songs with impact to maintaining composure and grace when unexpected issues arise. Special attention is given to helping instrumentalists engage the audience and interact seamlessly with vocalists. Through exercises, demonstration, and interactive scenarios, attendees will strengthen their ability to communicate within the band, design dynamic set lists, and deliver performances that not only captivate but also leave lasting impressions.
This workshop is designed to empower performers of all levels to enhance their stage presence, craft their individual styles, and ensure every performance is seamless and memorable.
Joining her in this workshop are guitarist Sam Lemann and bassist Ben Hanlon, both are accomplished band leaders and sidemen and both have worked with Hetty Kate for many years and been instrumental in her career. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to hear them play, ask questions, and gain insights from a musician's perspective.
About Hetty Kate
Musical from a young age and trained in piano, violin, and saxophone, jazz vocalist Hetty Kate began her singing career in Melbourne at 29—a later age than most. Mentored by some of Melbourne's most treasured jazz musicians, Hetty forged a path that led to a weekly residency, enabling her to build both her repertoire and her confidence. Now, nearly 20 years later, Hetty has acquired a wealth of experience, performing in 28 countries, releasing 11 albums, and, as one of her career highlights, touring for five years as the vocalist in Australian jazz legend James Morrison's band. This tenure brought her to major stages with the Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmanian, and Western Australia Symphony Orchestras, as well as orchestras in New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Czechia. In 2017, Hetty moved to Europe to continue her exploration and growth in music and has been based in Paris for seven years.
After two decades of touring, the stage has become Hetty's 'safe space,' where she thrives in diverse settings—singing with hundreds of groups all around the world.
After the workshop you can see Hetty and her Trio perform. at the Concert at 7.30pm. {$5 discount]
