SPANKINHIDE

The very existence of Spankinhide is to fuel the fire of dance. Rich African rhythms full of driving doundoun melodies with a crack and boom to fill the room! Led by Elliott Orr Spankinhide includes some of the finest rhythm legends of the Northern Rivers.f If you find you're not dancing, might be wise to check your pulse - you may be dead!

Bringing a blend of world music, modern beats, with a healthy dose of Brazilian and African sounds to create the perfect atmosphere for the night.

RAISSA

Raíssa is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and producer. Rooted in the rhythms of Brazil and inspired by jazz, MPB and contemporary music, she crafts a sound that refuses to fit into a single genre.

Based in Byron Bay, Australia, she performs in Portuguese and English, bringing authenticity, groove and emotion to every stage.

ZORMIWASA

A Hausa word from West Africa, 'Zormiwasa' means "come play music!". This is the student performance group of Elliott Orr. The combined years of drumming within this group that includes members from both the Northern Rivers and Brissie must be something like 150-200 years, so while there are some brand new hands to the world of the djembe there are also some very seasoned players coming together under the expert guidance and facilitation of Elliott Orr.

First Zormiwasa will perform a beautiful rhythm from West Africa named 'Dimbado' which is a ceremonial piece played in the lead up to a wedding when the mothers of the happy couple come together to meet and celebrate the union.

From here Zormiwasa will play the supportive rhythms for:

AFRICAN DANCE BYRON BAY

...who will perform the dance pieces Yankadi and Macru. Under the guidance and choreography of Ruby Bull-Watkins the regular dance students from the Tuesday night African dance class at Ewingsdale Hall. Yankadi is a dance of seduction and Macru a dance of celebration.

BATALA

Batala Australia is a Byron Bay-based Afro-Brazilian percussion group that plays traditional Samba-reggae rhythms. Their mission is to enrich and inspire our communities by providing Afro-Brazilian musical and cultural experiences, through workshops and live performances. We believe that music is a universal language that can inspire and have a positive influence on the broader community.’

Here is where Aruanda meets the Little Big Bang, with the rhythms of Brazil and West Africa coming together under the direction of Elliott Orr.

Imagine 40-50 people playing Brazilian and African drums in unison....imagine a wall of groove, so thick it moves your body.....imagine the smiles, the feelings, imagine the sense of community, and now double it!

With help by the Batala musical director Guy Anderton, Elliott has carefully selected rhythms from within their prospective repertoires that can be played together, simultaneously, at the same time. That's right! A rhythm of Africa, a composition by Chris Berry called Rutendo will be played by Zormiwasa and at the same time Batala will play a rhythm from Bahia called Baião. An exciting introduction, a couple of awesome phat grooves that just drip with juju, leading into a dynamic samba 'break and enter' before the grand finale.

This, good people of the Northern Rivers, is the very essence of community! Many beautiful souls bringing their love of rhythm and dance into a collective moment of connection and expression.
