The City of Mitcham has undertaken an innovative road pavement stabilisation trial using MasterCarb A, a biochar-based product, to explore more sustainable approaches to road rehabilitation.

The trial investigated the use of MasterCarb A as part of the pavement stabilisation process, with a focus on understanding its practical application, constructability, pavement performance and potential environmental benefits. By incorporating a biochar-based material into a conventional road rehabilitation process, the project provided an opportunity to assess how emerging sustainable products can be applied in real-world local government infrastructure.

The trial is helping the City of Mitcham build practical knowledge around the use of biochar-based products in pavement rehabilitation, including the opportunities, challenges and lessons associated with their on-site application. The findings will help inform future consideration of innovative and lower-impact materials in Council’s road infrastructure program and contribute to the broader discussion around sustainable infrastructure delivery.

Will Brown, experienced Civil Infrastructure Engineer at the City of Mitcham, with extensive experience in the planning, design and delivery of roads and other civil infrastructure. Will played a key role in the development of the Biochar Study, contributing his technical expertise and practical knowledge to explore the use of biochar in road infrastructure. He has a strong interest in innovative and sustainable engineering solutions that can deliver practical and long-term benefits for local government infrastructure.

Akash Lodaya, Project Engineer at the City of Mitcham with experience in the planning and delivery of civil infrastructure projects, including road, footpath and stormwater upgrades. Akash was involved in the delivery and implementation of the Biochar Study, helping translate the initiative into a practical infrastructure application.
