Event description

On Tuesday, 14 October, the Governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and Chairman of the Monetary Board, Eli M. Remolona, Jr. will deliver a briefing on the Philippines economy exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members - online via Zoom.

The Philippines has been rocked by anti-corruption protests this month after revelations that 17 lawmakers and officials received kickbacks from infrastructure contracts. Funds to the tune of 545 billion pesos (£7.1 billion) meant for flood-control infrastructure were associated with projects that were either sub-standard or never built. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. acknowledged the scandal in July and set up an independent commission to investigate. The Filipino central monetary authority, of which Remolona is Governor, has implemented various measures to crack down on money laundering and promote trust in the country’s financial system.

As the situation on the ground evolves by the day, Remolona will give to-the-minute, exclusive insights on the political economy of the Philippines during his briefing. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss with Remolona how the Philippines plans to restore investor confidence, particularly in infrastructure planning and development, how the country is handling the resignation of key Congress figures, and more. Governor Remolona has extensive experience in monetary policy and international finance. He worked for 19 years at the Bank for International Settlements and 14 years for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.  From 2019 to 2022, he served as professor of finance and director of central banking at the Asia School of Business in Kuala Lumpur. He has also taught at Williams College, Columbia University, New York University, and the University of the Philippines-School of Economics.

The session will be moderated by Michael Lawrence OBE, Chief Executive of Asia House. Places are limited, and Asia House corporate members will have priority access.
