Asia House Corporate Members Briefing with Catherine West MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Indo-Pacific)
Event description
Catherine West MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Indo-Pacific), will brief Asia House Corporate Members on the UK’s approach to China and provide exclusive insights into the recent China audit during an off-the-record session at Asia House on Thursday 25 September.
In this session, West will reflect on the UK government's evolving strategy towards China and how it is balancing economic interests with potential national security concerns. Drawing on her extensive experience in regional policy and foreign affairs, West will also provide valuable insights into how the UK is navigating its priorities in Asia amidst growing geopolitical tensions.
Appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in July 2024, West has represented Hornsey and Friern Barnet as a Labour MP since 2015. She previously led Islington Borough Council from 2010 to 2013 and has held multiple shadow ministerial roles, in addition to serving on both the International Trade and Foreign Affairs Select Committees.
This will be West’s second appearance at Asia House for a briefing, following her previous engagement where she shared insights on global challenges. Moderated by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE, the discussion will offer Corporate Members a unique opportunity to engage directly with West on the most pressing issues in UK foreign policy, especially in relation to China.
