Event description

“You’re pretty cute for an Asian.”

Join the Asian Cinema Collective for a special screening of Dìdi (2024) dir. Sean Wang on the big screen at Chinatown Cinema!

Didi is both charming and real – a killer combination. ... Wang’s directorial debut ... will leave teenagers and adults alike wincing at its observations. - James Mottram, South China Morning Post

Set in the summer of 2008, Didi is a debut feature film of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sean Wang that captures the beauty and awkwardness of adolescence in the early internet era. The film follows 13 year-old Taiwanese American Chris Wang as he navigates friendships, love and heartache in the final weeks of summer before high school. Caught between his immigrant family’s expectations and the freedom of online culture, Chris spends his summer break making YouTube videos with his friends and speaking to his crush on AIM - all while clashing with his mother (the iconic Joan Chen) and Paramore loving sister who is about to leave for college.

Drawing inspiration from his own upbringing, Didi is a semi-autobiographical portrait of identity, belonging and the bittersweet chaos of growing up and finding your own way. Masterfully accurate to the era of the late 2000s, Didi is filled with nostalgic nods to the culture, from Myspace messages, flip phones and flickering your online status to get the attention of your crush on AIM. Heartfelt and intensely relatable, Didi connects with anyone who has found themselves caught between two worlds - online and irl, childhood and adulthood and familial expectations and self-identity.
