Event description

Join the Asian Cinema Collective for our first screening of 2025 at the Chinatown Cinema! With a special 4K screening of Wong Kar Wai’s In The Mood For Love - just in time for Lunar New Year (or Valentines Day - whatever you celebrate)!

“I was only curious to know how it started. Now I know. Feelings can creep up just like that. I thought I was in control.”

Set against the backdrop of 1960’s Hong Kong, Wong Kar Wai’s In The Mood For Love transports us into a world of dimly lit corridors and staircases, smokey noodle stalls, incredible qi paos and forbidden connections. Neighbours Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung) are drawn together by a shared betrayal (through a shared wall), and find themselves in a slow dance of restraint and missed moments.

At its heart, In the Mood for Love is not just a story about infidelity or love; it is a meditation on time, memory, and the spaces in between. Starring frequent Wong Kar Wai collaborators Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, In The Mood For Love transforms everyday moments such as a slow walk down an alley or borrowing a book into profound moments of yearning. Filmmakers such as Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), and Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden) have cited the film as a significant influence on their work, for its visual and narrative poetry and exploration of intimacy and restraint.
