The Raid follows a team of special forces soldiers as they launch an unsanctioned raid on a rundown apartment complex in Jakarta, controlled by a merciless drug lord, Tama Riyadi. The mission to dismantle Tama’s drug empire quickly falls apart as they are exposed and attacked by his men who trap the team inside. A bloody and brutal battle ensues as the special forces team battle for survival to try to escape the apartment complex.
Originally intending to direct a documentary on the martial art of Penak silat, Welsh director Gareth Evans instead found inspiration to write and direct The Raid after meeting with silat practitioners (including Iko Uwais). With a largely Indonesian cast and crew - many of whom have gone on to work on films such as John Wick, Star Wars and Mortal Kombat - The Raid was one of the first films made in Indonesia to break through to a global audience and highlighted that high-quality action could be made outside of heavyweights of Hollywood and Hong Kong.
